That pile of models staring at me...

It's hard to believe that I only started in this hobby about 8 months ago.

Between then and now I've managed to get a decent 2000 point army that I can play with and enjoy painted and based -- which is good, because it allows me a little more freedom in that I don't have to be painting models because I need to add them to my army right away. That's why I'm not seriously concerned about not working on the terminator librarian at the moment because while using him is part of a larger plan, he's not necessary right now, so I can take my time with him, and I'm hoping the end result will show that.

Anyway, I was looking around my home office and I noticed that I have quite a few models staring at me from my shelves.

A Whirlwind. A Predator. A tac squad. An assault terminator squad. A few other things. We won't get into the other army I've been gathering models for, because it's going to be a pretty major undertaking to get it ready (I call it my "volunteer chaos" army...it's almost 100% composed of models I bought off Ebay or from other gamers...I seriously don't even have an overall plan for it yet...).

However, looking at all that virgin plastic I've decided that I'm not going to buy any new models until all the new ones I have now are done.

Unless, of course, the new space marine models -- such as the tasty, tasty Sternguard -- are released before I finish the models I have now (Are you with me? Do you honestly think I can resist those models? Can you??).

What this does mean is that I have quite a bit of "utilitarian" painting ahead of me. By that I mean I'm not going to lavish huge amounts of time on a tac squad -- and my airbrush makes pretty short work of vehicles.

So that leaves the assault termies...I really want to make them look good, particularly the lightning claws.

Which means I'm going to also need to get that terminator chaplain to go with them.

Oops.

I might have to renege on that decision sooner than I thought...

  1. Dude, if i had a troops choice for every time I said I wasn't going to purchase till I paint... oh wait... I do! Seriously though, I think of it as the hangover of GW collecting... "oh I'm never gonna buy another model till all these are painted"... then your wallet recovers a (tiny) bit... "oh look, I need one of those!"

  2. Oh, I know, I know. The sad thing is, most of the models I have were purchased months -- as in December '97 -- ago!

Looks like I need to start going to meetings...yes...at my local game store!

  3. I've got a second edition land speeder and predator still not painted yet! I've got 1st edition Rhinos that are converted to go back and forth between Rhino and Whilwind (back before you could buy a whirlwind) that are still not painted. But, maybe this fall when I plan to get back onto the Space Marine horse it will happen?

  4. Start small boys... I recommend Deathwing.

Only 26 models for me and a complete force. It's the only way I could get a finished army.

That's got to be part of the hobby though, having models that you "never" paint.

  5. @innergeek: Wow, you're way ahead of me. I don't feel so terribly bad now. :)

@ron: I've thought about DW before, but I really do like my Ultras...funny, though, I really DO like terminators (they are my favorite model so far). Hmm...maybe...NO, must. not. start. another. army!

  6. Hey, All,

I love modelling and (generally) loathe painting. So why did I choose a Guard army? I dunno. I guess I have about 7000 pts in total, and very only about 1/4 of it is fully painted, with mayne another 1000 pts half-done.

I figured the endless cycle of buying new stuff would go on ad infinitum, but I was surprised to discover about 8 months ago that I actually have all the models I need for the force I'd planned...that's right: I've not bought any Guard models since then!

Okay, so I've maybe tinkered a bit with my still-virginal WFB Empire army, and I did finally get around to selling my budding Black Templars army, but now I'm just slowly working through painting up the masses.

SURE I'd like to replace my current Armoured Fist platoon with 40 better, newer models, and SURE I'd like a battery of quad launchers, 3 big tanks and a squadron of vultures from Forgeworld...but whilst money's tight and I'm moving house, it just ain't gonna happen.

And I've been firm for 8 months!

At least I'm not going to have to buy a new rulebook anytime soo- D'oh!

    Oh well.

All I've got to do now is get everything painted up before some bugger releases a plastic valkyrie. Hmmm...what chance of success?

  7. I'm in the same boat as you, I have a SM army, started an IG army when Baneblade came out in plastic (i have a resin one too), and a separate 5000pts worth of Death Korps all still in their Forgeworld bags...
